International Day of Charity

With the 5th of September being the International Day of Charity, we’ve created a short guide on how you can help a local charity. Be it a call to befriend a social isolated person or a monthly financial donation, every little but helps.

Helping a charity is a wonderful way to make a positive impact on your community or on global issues you care about. There are many ways to support a charity, and your contributions can make a significant difference. Here are some steps you can take to help a charity:

  1. Identify Your Passion and Values:
    • Determine the causes that resonate most with you, such as education, health, poverty alleviation, environmental conservation, or animal welfare. Choose a cause that aligns with your values and interests.
  2. Research Charities:
    • Look for reputable charities that focus on the cause you care about. Websites like Charity Navigator, Guidestar, and GiveWell can help you evaluate their effectiveness and financial transparency.
  3. Donate Financially:
    • Make a one-time or recurring monetary donation. Every dollar counts and can help the charity fund its programs and projects.
  4. Volunteer Your Time:
    • Many charities rely on volunteers to carry out their work. Offer your time and skills to help with fundraising, event planning, administrative tasks, or direct service to beneficiaries.
  5. Fundraise:
    • Organize a fundraising event, run a charity marathon, or start a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for your chosen charity. Encourage your friends and family to contribute.
  6. Donate Goods:
    • Some charities accept in-kind donations such as clothing, food, school supplies, or medical supplies. Check with the charity to see what items they need.
  7. Support Online Campaigns:
    • Share the charity’s social media posts and campaigns to raise awareness and attract more supporters.
  8. Offer Professional Services:
    • If you have professional skills, consider providing pro bono services to a charity. For example, graphic designers can create promotional materials, while lawyers can offer legal advice.
  9. Create a Legacy:
    • Include the charity in your estate planning by leaving a bequest or naming them as a beneficiary in your will or life insurance policy.
  10. Advocate for Change:
    • Use your voice to advocate for policies and changes that can benefit the charity’s cause. Write to your elected representatives or participate in advocacy campaigns.
  11. Educate Yourself and Others:
    • Learn more about the issues the charity addresses and share your knowledge with others. Increased awareness can lead to more support.
  12. Join a Charity Board or Committee:
    • If you have expertise in a particular area, consider joining a charity’s board of directors or a committee to provide guidance and oversight.
  13. Encourage Corporate Giving:
    • If you work for a company, suggest corporate donations, matching gift programs, or employee volunteer initiatives to support the charity.
  14. Stay Informed and Engaged:
    • Continuously monitor the charity’s progress and impact. Stay engaged with their activities and adapt your support as needed.

Remember that even small contributions of time, money, or resources can make a significant difference in the work of a charity. Choose a level of involvement that suits your capacity and commitment, and feel proud of the positive change you’re helping to create in the world.
