September 2021, Full-time centre manager
The Racing Centre is a charitable community hub offering a range of services to the horseracing industry and the wider community of Newmarket. Following an exciting period of development, the Board of Trustees are now looking to recruit a Centre Manager. Working closely with the Trustees and staff team you will ensure the effective leadership, management and day-to-day running of The Racing Centre.
This is a varied role incorporating day-to-day operations alongside administrative and strategic support to the Board of Trustees, staff management, fundraising, budget management and charity governance. The role is pivotal to the smooth running and success of this vital community centre and in delivering the charity’s mission, vision and objectives.
Alongside management experience and a desire to make a difference, applicants will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills in order to build relationships and work in partnership. An interest in community development combined with the passion and motivation to deliver a portfolio of services to the horseracing industry and wider community is highly desirable.
This post will be based at The Racing Centre and is full time with occasional flexibility required during evenings and weekends by agreement with the Board of Trustees and in line with the centre requirements.

- To support the Board of Trustees in the strategic direction and management of all of the Racing Centre’s services and events.
- To oversee the daily operations of The Racing Centre in accordance with the strategy and parameters set by the Board of Trustees. Working with the Board to develop a strategy and annual business plan with agreed KPIs and outcomes.
- To agree and manage all budgets with the Board of Trustees.
- To guide and supervise direct reports ensuring that all staff and volunteers are fully supported and engaged. To develop and implement an effective performance management process that ensures staff are motivated by and aligned with The Racing Centre’s strategy.
- To ensure The Racing Centre’s services are fully promoted to its beneficiaries and the wider community. To grow and develop those services and events within The Racing Centre’s charitable objectives and strategic plan.
- To promote and build The Racing Centre’s engagement and relationships with key stakeholders and the wider community. To manage any relevant external relationships and raise the profile of the charity and promote its work. At all times, to be a champion of the Thoroughbred Horseracing and Breeding Industry.
- To assume direct responsibility for all fundraising, including supporting all funders and donors. To ensure that funders receive regular reports and to write new funding bids in line with the agreed strategy and business plan.
- To monitor and evaluate the work of The Racing Centre and provide regular reports to the Board of Trustees on the charity’s strategic performance and impact.
- To organise, prepare reports for and attend all board meetings and AGM.
- To review, write and implement all policies and procedures ensuring good governance in line with the principles set out in the Charity Commission’s Good Governance Code. To oversee, review and update the charity’s Risk Register.
- To oversee The Racing Centre premises ensuring they are suitably maintained and cleaned and to manage any external contracts. To be responsible for Health and Safety in the building/premises in line with all relevant legislation.
- To ensure that the safeguarding of all centre users and staff is of the highest priority and to act as the designated safeguarding lead for The Racing Centre.
- To ensure standards of excellence, best practice and efficiency through a highly effective team.
- To undertake any necessary training and CPD required for the role.
- To operate in a way that ensures you are a recognised role model for The Racing Centre’s Core Values, Mission and Vision.
- To comply at all times with Health & Safety regulations and safe working practices in accordance with current legislation and as detailed in the charity’s Health & Safety Policy and Procedures.
